Davie Luhanga a.k.a. Street Rat

Street Rat finally released his first international album on the 1st September 2015. In Malawi, he is a well known and respected artist, who’s made his name as front man and band leader of bands like ‘Souls of the Ghetto’ and ‘Body Mind & Soul’. A veteran to the Malawi scene, in Europe he’s still a newcomer who will have to prove his worth and talent once again.

Born in the Ghetto

To this album, Davie brings his own flavour of Malawian reggae; powerful, groovy and melodic, with what can only be described as a ‘live show’ feel to it – very danceable! Lyrically, the album deals with subjects like Life in Malawi as a Rasta (‘Born in the Ghetto’, ‘Dread Locks’, ‘Targeted’), Rastafarianism (‘Jah Power’, ‘Singing Mood’, ‘Meditation’ and sometimes Love (‘Ndakukonda’) which is also the only track sung in Chichewa, the national language of Malawi.

The album ‘Born in the Ghetto’ was recorded by Moto Wambili Studios (Spare Dog Records’ in-house recording studio in Malawi) in Mzuzu, Malawi. Musicians include members of Street Rat’s former band Body Mind & Soul, with a few brass and guitar overdubs done in Malawi and Bristol, UK.
